CHENNAI (formerly known as MADRAS), is the major gateway port on the south-east coast of India. It ranks second, behind JNPT / Nhava Sheva, in terms of volume of cargo handled. Over a century old, the operations and management of the container terminal were handed over to P&O Ports in November 2001.

Chennai is the gateway port for several inland container depots (ICDs), such as ICD Bangalore and ICD Hyderabad. It also caters to cargo from other inland areas such as Karur, Tirupur and Madurai. The port area has in its vicinity several container freight stations (CFSs) for handling of import and export cargo.

Chennai has an international airport with direct flights to several south-east Asian hubs as well as to the middle-east and Europe. This airport is the major facility for international air cargo for most of southern India.
